The San Joaquin Council of Governments’ Rise ‘N’ Ride event on Saturday, March 26, showcasing the agency’s new Stockton Mobility Collective was a big hit.
A steady stream of residents, neighbors and others test rode electric assist bicycles, previewed electric cars, heard about the new Stockton mobility project coming soon, and learned about a broad range of community groups and services at the event hosted by the Housing Authority of San Joaquin County at Conway Homes, 741 Flint Ave., Stockton. The electric bikes in particular, managed by project partner San Joaquin Regional Transit District, will help to connect residents to bus transit.
SJCOG’s new mobility project includes a group of programs that will create nonprofit car- and bikeshare programs and an e-workforce development program, expand the Vamos Mobility app, and provide incentives for shared mobility services. The idea is to improve mobility equity for people in underserved neighborhoods for trips to schools, grocery stores, workplaces, doctor’s appointments and more, while also reducing vehicle emissions and improving air quality.
The project is being paid for with a $7.4 million grant from CARB’s Sustainable Transportation Equity Project (STEP) and is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment, particularly in disadvantaged communities.
Stockton City Councilmember and SJCOG Boardmember Paul Canepa and San Joaquin Regional Transit District Vice Chair Gary Giovanetti, an ex officio member of the SJCOG board, both attended the event.
SJCOG’s partners in this include the San Joaquin Regional Transit District, Institute for Local Government, Míocar, Mobility Development Group, Sigala Inc, Third City Coalition, and UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies. On hand for the celebration were local environmental organizations involved with Stockton’s Transformative Climate Communities Program project, Stockton Rising, including Little Manila Rising, GRID Alternatives, Public Health Advocates, Rising Sun and more. Also there were dibs, SJCOG’s smart travel program, the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District and others.
