[ARCHIVED] Public input needed for region's future

RTP scenarios survey

Transportation is what connects us to people, places, and opportunities. Whether you get around by walking, biking, riding public transit, or driving--- the plan will look at all types of transportation and how it will shape communities in San Joaquin County.

The San Joaquin Council of Governments (SJCOG) is updating its Regional Transportation Plan and Sustainable Communities Strategy to reflect the needs of a growing region.

In the spring, SJCOG hosted public workshops, and participated in a number of community meetings and events throughout San Joaquin County to gather initial input on transportation needs in the region. More than 1000 residents added their voice to a conversation about connecting San Joaquin County. With the input gathered, transportation planners have drafted scenarios representing potential alternative futures for the region.

“Transportation is about more than just cars and roads,” says Kim Anderson, project manager at SJCOG. “It’s about providing alternative and sustainable ways to connect residents to the places they need to go, both within the county and beyond.”

Residents are encouraged to provide feedback by participating in an interactive online activity guiding them through questions and scenarios related to cars, public transit, walking, and bicycling.

Throughout the fall, SJCOG will also host additional workshops and conduct outreach in local communities to gain even more feedback. Community groups are encouraged to invite SJCOG to their events in order to increase participation throughout the region.

“The goal of our Regional Transportation Plan and Sustainable Communities Strategy is to look at what the region needs tomorrow, as well as today,” said Anderson. “As one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, we need to ensure a transportation system that addresses sustainability and serves the needs of our diverse communities.”
