I-205 Six Lane Widening Project
Project Description
This project widened Interstate 205 (I-205) from a four-lane
freeway to a six-lane freeway by constructing additional lanes in the
median.
The project also included widening existing structures, construction of
a median barrier, and re-striping Interstate 5 prior to the North Bound
I-5/I-205 Connector.
This project was needed to enhance capacity and alleviate current traffic
congestion on Interstate 205, which is currently at Level of Service
(LOS) of F during peak periods.

The Department of Transportation (Caltrans), together with the San
Joaquin Council of Governments, and the City of Tracy hosted a
groundbreaking ceremony to kick-off construction on the widening of
Interstate 205 on April 28, 2006. Held at the east parking area of West
Valley Mall in Tracy, adjacent to the freeway, the long awaited event
attracted more than 100 officials, citizens, staff, and media
representatives.
A
ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in April 2009 to celebrate the
completion of the widening project. Caltrans celebrated the opening with
a dedication featuring Caltrans Interim District 10 Director Tony
Tavares, San Joaquin Council of Governments Executive Director Andy
Chesley, San Joaquin County Supervisor Leroy Ornellas and Tracy Mayor
Brent Ives, along with Stockton businessman Ort Lofthus who helped
spearhead the project.
